Honeywell Voyager: keyboard country, Enter and Tab suffix
Match the Voyager to your PC keyboard layout, add or remove Enter or Tab after each scan, and return to factory or custom defaults.
In this guide
A Voyager in USB keyboard mode sends key presses, not letters, and it assumes a US keyboard. If Windows uses another layout, some characters change. This guide shows how to set the keyboard country, how to add or remove Enter or Tab after each scan, and how to return to defaults. It applies to the corded 1470g and the cordless 1472g.
Where to find the bar codes
- The 1470g Quick Start Guide and 1472g Quick Start Guide contain the suffix and default bar codes and a short list of keyboard countries, which includes Finland but none of our other markets.
- The Voyager 147X Series User Guide, chapter "Program the Interface", section "Keyboard Country Layout", lists all countries. It is listed on Honeywell's product page; Honeywell may ask you to sign in to download it.
On the 1472g, the base stores the settings while the scanner is linked. Place the scanner in its base and check that it is linked (one beep on a test scan) before you scan any programming bar code.
Check the keyboard layout on the PC
Select the input language icon on the Windows taskbar to see the active layout. On Windows 11 you can also open Settings › Time & language › Language & region, select ··· next to your language and then Language options; the layouts are listed under Keyboards. Note the exact name, for example "Estonian" or "Polish (Programmers)".
Scan the matching keyboard country
- Open the User Guide at "Keyboard Country Layout" and find your layout in the table below.
- Scan that bar code, for example Estonia.
- Open Notepad and scan a bar code that contains letters, digits and symbols. Compare the result with the text under the bar code.
The keyboard country matters whenever the scanner works as a USB keyboard or keyboard wedge. For both, Honeywell's User Guide sets a US keyboard as the default.
Which setting for our markets
| Market | Windows layout in use | Bar code to scan (User Guide, Keyboard Countries) |
|---|---|---|
| Estonia | Estonian (Windows default) | Estonia |
| Latvia | Latvian (QWERTY) | Latvia (QWERTY) |
| Latvia | Latvian (Standard), the Windows default, or another Latvian layout | Not listed by this name. Honeywell lists Latvia and Latvia (QWERTY): test both, or see "If your layout is not listed" |
| Lithuania | Lithuanian (Windows default) | Lithuania |
| Lithuania | Lithuanian IBM | Lithuania (IBM) |
| Finland | Finnish (Windows default) | Finland (also in both Quick Start Guides) |
| Poland | Polish (Programmers), the Windows default | Polish (Programmers) |
| Poland | Polish (214) | Polish (214) |
| Czechia | Czech (Windows default) | Czech. Honeywell also lists Czech (QWERTZ): if characters are still wrong, test it |
| Czechia | Czech (QWERTY) | Czech (QWERTY) |
| Czechia | Czech Programmers | Czech (Programmers) |
| Any | US | United States, the default (USA (Default) in the Quick Start Guides) |
The list also contains a plain Poland entry; Honeywell does not say which Windows layout it matches, so prefer Polish (Programmers) on a standard Windows PC.
With Finland selected, Honeywell's national character replacement is on by default for Code 128, Code 39 and Code 93. Symbols such as $ @ [ ] { } in those bar codes can then arrive as other characters. If that is not what you want, the User Guide explains the replacement table (Appendix A, "ISO 2022/ISO 646 Character Replacements") and the code page setting for each bar code type, for example "Code 128 Code Page".
If your layout is not listed
The Voyager 147X User Guide does not document an Alt-code mode that would work with any layout. These documented options help instead:
- Match the PC to the scanner. Add a listed layout in Windows, for example Latvian (QWERTY), and select it on the scanning PC.
- Numeric Keypad Mode On (section "Keyboard Modifiers") sends digits as if typed on the numeric keypad. This helps with number-only bar codes on layouts whose number row types letters.
- Keyboard Style fixes case problems: scan Caps Lock if staff work with Caps Lock on, or Automatic Caps Lock on keyboards with a Caps Lock light. The default is Regular.
If none of these gives the right result, contact us with the layout name and a sample bar code.
Add Enter or Tab after each scan
A suffix is a key the scanner sends after the data. Honeywell lists no suffix as the factory default, but the USB Keyboard (PC) interface bar code adds CR and LF. Check what your scanner does in Notepad first.
- Open the Quick Start Guide at "Suffix".
- To press Enter after each scan, scan Add CR Suffix. The User Guide also lists Add CR Suffix All Symbologies (chapter "Data Edit"), which first clears all current suffixes and then adds CR for all bar code types.
- To press Tab instead, for example to jump to the next field in a form, scan Add Tab Suffix.
- To send the data without any key after it, scan Remove Suffix.
- Test in Notepad: with Enter, the cursor moves to a new line after each scan.
When you switch between Enter and Tab, scan Remove Suffix first and then the new suffix, so you do not end up with two.
Tab with the User Guide only
The User Guide builds a Tab suffix from the programming chart: scan Add Suffix, then 9 and 9 for all bar code types, then 0 and 9 (the hex value of Tab), then Save.
Return to defaults
Honeywell has two kinds of defaults. Factory defaults are Honeywell's settings. Custom defaults are your own set, saved with Set Custom Defaults, your settings, then Save Custom Defaults (User Guide, chapter "Get Started").
- Standard Product Defaults in the Quick Start Guides resets the scanner to Honeywell's standard default settings.
- Activate Custom Defaults in the User Guide returns to your custom defaults, or to factory defaults if none are saved. Honeywell calls it the recommended default bar code for most users.
- For a full factory reset, scan Remove Custom Defaults, then Activate Defaults (User Guide, chapter "Utilities"). This erases all settings and disables any plug-ins.
On the 1472g, a reset and saving custom defaults both unlink the scanner. Place it in the base and wait for the link before you scan any further settings.
Save your keyboard country and suffix as custom defaults, and a later Activate Custom Defaults scan brings them back. More fixes are in our Voyager troubleshooting guide; setup is in the Voyager setup guide.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Honeywell scanner type Z instead of Y?
The PC uses a QWERTZ layout, but the scanner assumes US. Scan the keyboard country that matches the Windows layout, for example Czech.
Is Estonian supported on the Voyager 1470g and 1472g?
Yes. Estonia is in the Keyboard Countries list of the Voyager 147X Series User Guide, as are Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Czech variants.
How do I stop the scanner pressing Enter after each scan?
Scan Remove Suffix from the Quick Start Guide, then test in Notepad.
Do I need to repeat the settings after a restart?
No. Settings stay stored until you change them or reset to defaults. On the 1472g they are stored in the base while the scanner is linked.
