Zebra ZT411 red light or 'Paused': causes and fixes
The ZT411 reports problems through five indicator lights on the control panel and an alert message on the touch display. A yellow or red home screen means an alert is active. Find your light pattern or message below and open the matching fix.

Fixes
1. "MEDIA OUT" with labels loadedRed STATUS + steady red SUPPLIES
CauseLabels are loaded wrongly, the sensor is not over the gaps, or the printer expects gap labels but continuous media is loaded.
Fix
- Open the media door and lift the printhead-open lever.
- Feed the labels from the hanger under the dancer assembly, through the media sensor and under the printhead. Push them back against the inside wall of the sensor, then slide the media guide in until it just touches the edge.
- Check that the green sensor light shines through a gap, notch or hole. Slide the sensor sideways if needed.
- Set Print › Print Quality › Label Type to match your labels, close the head, calibrate with Print › Sensors › Manual Calibration and press PAUSE.
Labels that load but skip or drift are covered in our skipping labels guide.

2. "RIBBON OUT" with ribbon loadedRed STATUS + flashing red SUPPLIES
CauseThe ribbon sensor cannot see the ribbon. It is missing or loaded wrongly, media is blocking the sensor, or you print direct thermal labels while the printer is set to Thermal Transfer.
Fix
- Push the ribbon roll fully back on the supply spindle. If it sits too far forward, it misses the ribbon sensor when the head closes.
- Check that the coated side faces out and the ribbon runs as far back under the printhead as it can.
- Close the head and calibrate.
- Direct thermal labels without ribbon? Set Print › Print Quality › Print Type to Direct Thermal here and in your driver.
- Still not detected? Calibrate again, or use System › Settings › Restore Defaults › Restore Printer.
3. "HEAD OPEN" with the head closedRed STATUS + yellow PAUSE
CauseThe printhead is not fully closed, or the head-open sensor is faulty.
Fix
- Rotate the printhead-open lever down until it locks.
- Close the media door and press PAUSE.
- If the alert stays, the sensor needs replacing by a technician. Contact us.
4. Printer paused, nothing printsYellow PAUSE only
CauseSomeone pressed PAUSE, or a procedure such as loading ribbon, calibration or cleaning left the printer paused.
Fix
- Press PAUSE once. STATUS turns steady green when the printer is ready.
- To clear stuck jobs first: while paused, press CANCEL once to drop the next label format, or hold it for 2 seconds to drop all of them.
- If it pauses again straight away, read the display message and use the matching fix.
In Peel Off mode the printer waits after each label until you take it. That is normal.
5. "RIBBON IN" alertYellow STATUS + flashing yellow SUPPLIES
CauseA ribbon is loaded, but the printer is set to Direct Thermal.
Fix
- Direct thermal labels: remove the ribbon. Printing is not affected.
- Thermal transfer labels: set Print › Print Quality › Print Type to Thermal Transfer.
- If the alert stays without ribbon, calibrate.
6. "HEAD OVER TEMP" or "HEAD UNDER TEMP"Steady or flashing yellow STATUS
CauseSteady yellow: the printhead is too hot. Flashing yellow: it is near its lower limit, or the main logic board or power supply is too hot.
Fix
- Too hot: let it cool; printing resumes on its own. If it repeats, lower the print speed or move the printer somewhere with open space on all sides.
- Too cold: keep printing while the head warms up. If the alert stays, the room is probably too cold (the ZT411 needs 5 to 40 °C for thermal transfer, 0 to 40 °C for direct thermal).
- If "HEAD UNDER TEMP" alternates with "HEAD THERMISTOR FAULT", a printhead cable or the thermistor is at fault. Contact us for service.
The printhead can be hot enough to burn, even with an under-temperature alert. Let it cool before you touch it.
7. "PAPER JAM"Message on the display
CauseLabels are loaded wrongly, caught in the path or wrapped around the platen roller.
Fix
- Open the media door, lift the printhead-open lever and remove torn or loose labels.
- Peel wrapped labels off the platen roller carefully and clean off adhesive with a swab and 99.7% isopropyl alcohol.
- Reload, close the head and press PAUSE.
8. "CUTTER ERROR"Cutter models only
CauseThe cutter blade is in the media path.
Fix
- Switch the printer off and unplug it.
- Inspect the cutter and clean it as described under "Cleaning and Lubricating the Standard Cutter Module" in the ZT411 user guide. Linerless cutters have their own section there.
The blade is sharp. Keep your fingers off it.
9. Printhead not recognisedRed STATUS, PAUSE and DATA, or flashing red STATUS
CauseThree red lights ("HEAD IDENTIFICATION FAILED") mean the printhead is not recognised as genuine Zebra. Flashing red STATUS means the printer cannot read the printhead's dpi setting.
Fix
- Make sure a genuine Zebra printhead is fitted.
- Switch the printer off, wait 30 seconds and switch it on.
- If the error returns, the printhead needs replacing. Contact us.
"HEAD MAINTENANCE NEEDED" means the head needs cleaning: see our faded print guide.
10. Red NETWORK lightSteady red NETWORK
CauseAn Ethernet or WLAN error. On Wi-Fi, flashing red or yellow only means the printer is still connecting.
Fix
- Wired: check the cable at both ends and try another switch port.
- Touch Printer Info on the home screen. An IP address of 0.0.0.0 means no connection.
- Wi-Fi: check the ESSID and security, then apply with Connection › Networks › Reset Network. See our ZT411 Wi-Fi guide.
ZT411 printers sold in the EU from 1 August 2025 ship with Wi-Fi switched off. You must set a Protected Mode password and a front-panel password before changing network settings.
