Switch an Epson receipt printer to 58 mm paper

The TM-T20IV, TM-m30III and TM-T88VII print on 80 mm paper out of the box, and all three can switch to 58 mm rolls. The change has two parts: a plastic roll paper guide in the paper compartment, and the paper width setting in the printer.

Important

This is a one-way change. Epson warns that once you have printed on 58 mm paper, you cannot go back to 80 mm. Parts of the print head that normally sit outside the paper touch the platen roller and can wear or be damaged, and the autocutter can wear. Only switch if you will stay on 58 mm.

How each model does it

All three take 58 mm rolls with a paper width of 57.5 ± 0.5 mm and a diameter of up to 83 mm. On the TM-T88VII, the maximum print speed drops from 500 to 450 mm/s at 58 mm.

Fit the 58 mm roll paper guide

  1. Switch the printer off.
  2. Open the roll paper cover and take out the 80 mm roll.
  3. Fit the guide for your model:
    • TM-T20IV: line up the three tabs of the guide with the rectangular holes in the printer and push the guide down.
    • TM-m30III: fit the guides so the triangle marks line up. On some models they are already installed at the factory.
    • TM-T88VII: fit the guide so the protrusion on the roll paper holder sits in the hole on the printer. Fix it with the supplied screw if you like.
  4. Drop in the 58 mm roll so the paper comes off the underside of the roll, pull out a little paper and close the cover.

Change the paper width setting

Choose one of two ways. The result is the same.

With the Feed button (software setting mode)

This works on all three models without a computer. The printer prints instructions as you go.

  1. Close the roll paper cover. Hold Feed while you switch the printer on, and keep holding it until printing starts. The self-test prints and the printer waits.
  2. Hold Feed for at least one second. The mode selection menu prints and the Paper LED flashes.
  3. Press Feed briefly three times, then hold it for at least one second. The software setting mode menu prints.
  4. Select the paper width item: press Feed briefly as many times as the number printed next to it, then hold it for at least one second. On the TM-T88VII this is item 6, Paper Width. On the TM-T20IV, Paper Width & Print Column is part of item 7, Character/Column Settings.
  5. Select the 58 mm option the same way. The printer saves it and prints the menu again.
  6. Switch the printer off, or choose Exit and then "Exit and Reboot Printer".

Pressed the wrong number of times? The printer ignores invalid choices and prints the same menu again.

With the Epson utility

Connect the printer to the computer, open its utility and change the paper width there. The Windows utilities (TM-T20IV Utility, TM-m30III Utility, TM-T88VII Utility) are on Epson's download pages for the TM-T20IV, TM-m30III and TM-T88VII. For the TM-m30III and TM-T88VII you can also use the Epson TM Utility app for iOS and Android.

Change the paper size in Windows and your POS app

The printable width is now only about 52.5 mm (TM-T20IV, TM-m30III) or 50.8 mm (TM-T88VII), so the software must send a layout that fits.

  • Epson APD6 driver: open Printers & scanners › your printer › Printer properties › Preferences, go to the Layout tab, click Advanced and choose a paper size that fits 58 mm paper under Paper Size. If none fits, register one first as User Defined Paper in the APD6 Utility (Advanced Settings tab › Advanced Settings).
  • Keep an 80 mm layout: the APD6 Utility (Advanced Settings tab › Advanced Settings › Layout) has an option to print an 80 mm layout reduced onto 58 mm paper. Epson notes that some models may not support it.
  • POS app: set the receipt or paper width to 58 mm in the app's printer settings.

The driver installation itself is covered in Install the Epson receipt printer driver on Windows. For Loyverse POS, see Set up an Epson receipt printer in Loyverse POS.

Print a test receipt

Run a self-test, then print a receipt from your POS software. Check that nothing is cut off on the right and that the cut is clean. If the text is cut off, the software is probably still sending an 80 mm layout. Setup steps for each model are in the guides for the TM-T20IV, TM-m30III and TM-T88VII.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch an Epson receipt printer back from 58 mm to 80 mm?

No. Epson says that once you have printed on 58 mm paper on the TM-T20IV, TM-m30III or TM-T88VII, you cannot go back to 80 mm, because parts of the print head and autocutter wear.

Where is the 58 mm paper guide for the Epson TM-T20IV?

It is in the box as a separate part. Epson's manual calls it the 58 mm width roll paper guide; Epson Europe's box list names a paper roll spacer. On some TM-m30III models the guides are already fitted.

How many characters fit on 58 mm paper?

With the standard Font A, 35 characters per line on the TM-T20IV and TM-m30III, and 30 on the TM-T88VII. The TM-T20IV also has a 42-character option for 58 mm.

Why is the right side of my 58 mm receipt cut off?

The driver or POS app is probably still sending an 80 mm layout. Choose a paper size that fits 58 mm paper in the driver and set the paper width in your POS app.
