Epson TM-T88VII troubleshooting: lights, errors and fixes
The TM-T88VII reports problems with five lights: Power, Error, Paper, Ethernet and Wi-Fi. When the printer is ready, the Power light is on and the Error and Paper lights are off; the Ethernet light is also on while a network cable is connected. When the Error light flashes, its rhythm tells you which error it is.

Fixes
1. Paper out or nearly outPaper light on, with or without the Error light
CauseError and Paper on together: the roll is empty and printing has stopped. Paper on alone: the near-end sensor sees that the roll is almost used up.
Fix
- Press the cover open button, remove the empty core and drop in a new roll so the paper comes off the underside of the roll.
- Pull out a little paper, close the cover and tear off the end.
- Near-end warning too late? Epson's technical guide shows how to move the near-end sensor to its upper position.
2. Cover openError light on
CauseThe roll paper cover is open or not fully closed.
Fix
- Press the cover down firmly until it locks.
- The printer recovers on its own when the cover is closed. Never open the cover while the printer is printing.
3. Printhead or motor too hotError light flashing fast and continuously
CauseLong print runs have overheated the printhead or motor, or the cover was opened during printing.
Fix
- Check that the cover is closed.
- Wait. The printer continues on its own when the printhead has cooled, or after a short time for the motor.
- Keep the room between 5 and 45 °C and don't cover the printer.
The printhead and the frame next to it can be very hot after printing. Don't touch them.
4. Autocutter error, cover won't openError light: one short flash about every 5 seconds
CausePaper or a foreign object has blocked the autocutter. The blade then stays out of position and locks the roll paper cover.
Fix
- Switch the printer off.
- If the roll paper cover does not open, slide the cutter cover towards the front to open it.
- Turn the knob until you see a triangle in the opening. This returns the blade to its normal position.
- Close the cutter cover, open the roll paper cover and remove the jammed paper or object.
- Close the roll paper cover and switch on. The error clears when the cover is closed.
5. Paper jamError light: one short and one longer flash about every 5 seconds
CauseThe paper is stuck in the paper path, often because it was pulled or a torn piece stayed behind.
Fix
- Switch the printer off and open the roll paper cover. If it won't open, follow Fix 4 first.
- Remove the jammed paper carefully. Never pull it out with force.
- Reload the roll, close the cover and switch on.
6. Nothing printsNo lights, or no error at all
CauseNo power, a loose cable, the wrong driver or mismatched settings.
Fix
- Power light off: check both plugs of the PS-190 power supply and the power switch at the front right.
- Run a self-test: hold FEED while you switch on until printing starts. If it prints, the printer works and the problem is the connection or software.
- USB: install the APD6 driver as shown in our Windows driver guide.
- Serial: match your software to the printer: 9600 bps, 8 bits, no parity, DTR/DSR by default.
- Network: see Fix 8.
- Error light on most of the time, with a burst of one or more quick flashes about every 5 seconds? That is an internal error: switch off at once. If it comes back after switching on again, the printer needs service. Contact us.
7. Blank, faded or streaky receiptsPrintout missing or light
CauseBlank paper: the roll is in the wrong way round. Faded or streaky print: a dirty printhead, a low density setting or unsuitable paper.
Fix
- Blank receipts: reload the roll so the paper comes off the underside of the roll.
- Clean the printhead: switch off, open the cover, let the head cool and wipe the heating elements with a cotton swab moistened with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. Epson recommends this about every 3 months.
- Uneven feeding: clean the platen roller with a swab moistened with water; switch on only when it is dry.
- Check the print density: default 100 %, adjustable from 70 to 130 % with TM-T88VII Utility or Epson TM Utility.
- Paper left in the printer for a long time: feed about 30 mm first. Pre-printed paper can print lighter.
8. Printer not reachable on the networkEthernet light off or flashing
CauseLight off: no link. Flashing: no IP address yet. Light on but no printing: wrong IP address or subnet, or a blocked printing method.
Fix
- Check the cable at both ends and try another switch port.
- Print a status sheet: hold the status sheet button underneath for 3 seconds, or open the cover, hold FEED for 1 second and close the cover. Compare the IP address with the one in your POS app or driver port.
- Run Epson's network check: after the status sheet, press FEED briefly twice, then hold it for at least 1 second. The report shows an error number, for example 1 for a disconnected cable, 8 for an incorrect IP address or 10 for wrong IP, subnet or gateway settings.
- If the status sheet shows "Security Mode: RED", the printer blocks unencrypted network printing, such as raw printing to port 9100, by default. Use RED-compatible software, or read the Secure Printing section of our TM-T88VII setup guide before you change anything.
- To reset only the network settings: switch off, close the cover, remove the connector cover, then hold the status sheet button while you switch on. Keep holding until a reset message prints.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the Error light on when I switch the TM-T88VII on?
It lights while the printer starts up and goes out when the printer is ready. If it stays on, check that the cover is closed and that paper is loaded.
What does "Security Mode: RED" on the status sheet mean?
The printer follows the EU cybersecurity rules for radio equipment. Over the network it only accepts encrypted printing from up-to-date software while Secure Printing is on, which is the default. USB and serial printing work as usual.
How do I reset the TM-T88VII?
To reset network settings only, hold the status sheet button while switching on. To restore all default settings, use the Restore Default Values mode after a self-test, as described in Epson's technical guide.
